South America is a continent with many captivating countries and attractions. From the Amazon in Brazil to Machu Picchu in Peru, there is no shortage of things to do in this part of the world. The best attractions are often found deep within the rainforests or high up on mountain peaks, so it’s important to get yourself prepared if you want to explore these natural wonders.

The following are some of the best attractions found throughout South America:

Angel Falls – Venezuela

Located deep within Venezuela’s Gran Sabana region, this waterfall plunges over 3200 feet into a narrow canyon below. It is an awe-inspiring sight that can only be fully appreciated from far away because once you’re close enough for a view, all you’ll be able to see is a silent curtain of water. The best way to travel here is by airplane, but visitors are also welcome to hike through the jungle if they want to experience all this natural wonder has to offer.

Uyuni Salt Flats – Bolivia

A dried bed of salt is all that remains from a large prehistoric lake in the southwest corner of the country. This area has been mined for its salt, which has been used for everything from preserving meat to making glass; but today, these flats are mainly used as a site for unique photos. The best time to visit is during the rainy season when the flats are covered in a thin layer of water that creates a perfect mirror-like reflection of the sky.

Iguazu Falls – Argentina / Brazil Border

These impressive falls straddle the border between Argentina and Brazil and are aptly named Iguazu which means “big water” in the language of the Guarani (an indigenous people) who used to live in this area. There are many sets of falls here, with 275 separate cascades spread over a spectacular 2.7-mile stretch. The highest waterfall stands at a towering 82 feet tall.

Machu Picchu – Peru

This ancient Incan citadel is one of the most famous and popular tourist destinations in South America. It’s located high in the Andes Mountains, and can only be reached by hiking up a steep trail or taking a train ride from the town of Aguas Calientes below. The journey is worth it, as Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved ruins in all of South America.

Amazon Rainforest – Brazil / Peru / Ecuador

The Amazon rainforest is the largest in the world and stretches across parts of Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. It’s a vast and largely unexplored area, home to an incredible diversity of plant and animal life. Visitors can explore the rainforest by foot, boat, or airplane, and may even be lucky enough to see some of the jungle’s elusive inhabitants such as jaguars, monkeys, and pink dolphins.

There are certainly many other attractions to be found in South America, but these are some of the most notable and must-see destinations for any visitor. So prepare yourself for an amazing adventure and enjoy everything this captivating continent has to offer. You won’t regret it!
