The history of French Guiana started when it was found in 1496 by the Spanish. When the Spanish discovered it, they displaced the original inhabitants of the French Guiana, who were tribal Amerindian people that included Arawaks and Caribs. Then after a century, almost all French settlers moved to French Guiana and formed a trading colony in cayenne and along the coast.

Then under the treaty of Breda in 1667, the Dutch were forced out as they had shown interest in French Guiana. For the next 200 years, numerous changes in control were made alternatively between France, Britain, the Netherlands, and Portugal. This all came to an end when the territory was confirmed by the french in 1817. The colony then prospered as gold was discovered, and all were very happy. But as their happiness tends to come to an end at a point in time, and when the colony went into decline, it never fully recovered.
